In this instructional lecture series, we shall study the Shimura varieties for quaternionic unitary groups. These are moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties with multiplication by an maximal order of an indefinite quaternion algebra. Our plan is first to introduce the background and describe our recent work with Jiangwei Xue and Yasuhiro Terakado on the main results concerning the supersingular locus. Then follow up we shall discuss the ingredients of the proofs and explain in more details on computing the number of irreducible components and the number of orbits of irreducible components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in question.
